Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Slap bang in the centre of town, you couldn't really ask for a better location than this. You'll have no need for taxis or buses - Bath's best sights, restaurants and drinking dens are all on your doorstep and although the rooms are pretty basic, it's an excellent deal.

It's true the rooms at the YMCA look a little tired - they could do with a new lick of paint and the bare walls and cheap furniture leave them totally devoid of character - but with quiet dorms sleeping a maximum of four and a large choice of private rooms sleeping up to three people they're still one of the best budget options in town. The price is reasonable, the location is excellent and you won't have to climb over several other travellers and their backpacks just to get to your bunk. The popular cafe downstairs does good value meals, and has a kettle and microwave if you want to make your own food outside opening hours. There are laundry facilities, a good TV lounge and you can buy a day membership to the well-equipped YMCA gym. Book well in advance in summer.

Join a free walking tour of the city from outside the Pump Room to get an insight into the history and building of the city, stop for lunch at Cafe Retro and then wander through the reclaimers' yards on Walcot St for period bargains. Finish the day by watching the sun set over the honey-coloured buildings of the Royal Crescent.
