Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Oozing charm and style, and dripping in period character, Bath's grandest hotel is located on England's most magnificent crescent and lords over the elegant city below with the understated air of true refinement.

Once you step through the door of the Royal Crescent Hotel, a languid sense of calm descends around you, and the graceful proportions and sumptuous furnishings transport you back in time. Eighteenth-century grandeur is lovingly recreated here with incredible attention to detail (the cleaning staff are dressed in traditional uniform with starched white aprons). The hotel is spread out over six buildings surrounding a secluded central garden, but the most magnificent rooms are in the main house. Here, you'll find paintings by Gainsborough and Reynolds, high ceilings covered with elaborate plasterwork and massive suites with imposing four-poster beds. Some rooms have working fireplaces and most have majestic views over the crescent and the lawns below. Rooms in the other buildings are smaller and not quite so grand, but retain the period styling, antique furniture and magnificent bathrooms.

Author Tip

There's really no need to ever leave your hotel except to take a morning stroll along the glorious crescent and a visit to No 1 for a glimpse of life in the 18th century. Then return to the hotel for an afternoon of relaxation and pampering in the Bath House spa and finish the evening with dinner at Pimpernel's, overlooking the secluded hotel gardens.

Curious Fact

The Royal Crescent was designed by John Wood the Younger in 1767 and took eight years to build.
