Lonely Planet Review
Set on Bath's most majestic street, Dukes is an imposing Palladian-style townhouse that has been restored to its Georgian splendour with elaborate period decor, plenty of hearty florals and some magnificent suites.
Although all the rooms at Dukes are individually decorated they share a penchant for heavy swag curtains, dark furniture, moody lighting and rich colour schemes. The most sumptuous decor, however, is found in the suites, which resemble the set of a lavish period drama. Drawing inspiration from the fashionable travel destinations of the Georgian era, they are decked out in Oriental Chinoiserie, classical English botanica or French and Italian themes but it can all be a bit overpowering with the extravagant decor making the rooms feel smaller than they are despite the wonderfully high ceilings, giant windows and original plasterwork. Most rooms offer views over dignified Great Pulteney St or the rugby and cricket grounds below, and downstairs there's a small patio garden and the intimate Cavendish restaurant which serves modern British cuisine.

Author Tip
Nip around the corner to visit the Holburne Museum to see its fine antiques, porcelain and paintings before strolling across Pulteney Bridge to admire the weir and browse through the shops. Then pop into Sally Lunn's for a hearty traditional lunch and the strength to take on the nearby Roman Baths and Abbey.
