Address: Deira , Dubai , United arab emirates Show on map
Our favourite budget Deira hotel is run by warm and welcoming innkeepers. It's inside a historic building, and while it might be short on amenities, it more than compensates with charm. And the location is perfect for exploring Deira's heritage areas.Al-Hijaz occupies an historic building, with rooms on two floors surrounding a central courtyard. While we wish the courtyard didn't have a television and was lit with something better than blue-white compact fluorescent lighting, there's no denying the architectural elegance of the space. Though they can feel a bit cavernous for their open space, rooms are spotless, with tiled floors, satellite TV, and some charming details like carved wooden armoires and embroidery-edged pillowcases. Suites are huge. The inn is tucked between Al-Ahmadiya School and Heritage House, two of Dubai's most important and oldest buildings, both now museums. The call to prayer from the adjacent mosque is atmospheric, but really loud; bring earplugs. Note: no alcohol.

After checking out the local heritage sights, head to the Gold Souq for bling. Take an abra (water taxi) across the Creek to check out the textile souq and the Bastakia quarter. For a splurge, book a table at Bastakia Nights (tel: 353 7772; near the Rulers Court, off Al-Fahidi St), an Arabian restaurant in a restored former home.
