This old-style guesthouse is ideally located just off one of Dublin's most beautiful Georgian squares in an equally handsome building. It shows its age but for the price you won't find anything near as good in the neighbourhood.

If you're looking to bed down in a classic Georgian house in the Georgian heart of the city but don't want to spend an absolute fortune for the privilege, the Fitzwilliam - not to be confused with the much fancier, swankier and modern hotel of the same name on St Stephen's Green - is one of the best (nay, only) options around. What you save in cash, though, you'll forego in style. While there's absolutely nothing wrong with any of the rooms, they are a little smallish (a common Dublin complaint) and lacking in the fussy aesthetics these Georgian townhouses have spent so much time and effort looking to recreate. Floral pattern duvets and uninspired furnishings are the mainstay, while the bathrooms could do with a decent once over. What it lacks in style, however, it more than makes up for in cleanliness and friendliness, not to mention location and price - we reckon four out of five ain't bad at all.
