London law-firm escapee Annabella and her husband Youssef offer laid-back hospitality and nine cheerful, shabby-chic guestrooms with tadelakt (polished-plaster) bathrooms. There aren't any pretensions here, just big, clean, Berber-style rooms in organic earthy tones with private baths, winking lamps, and loads of personal attention from Youssef, Annabelle and their staff. The Sagaya is essentially a Moroccan home open to the public: bold, bright, and typically Marrakshi with the original tiled floors, wrought-iron balconies and seven spacious rooms arranged around a sociable courtyard where superb mint tea is constantly being poured. The rooms to get are the sunny 1st-floor courtyard rooms and the downstairs Douiriya, a secret all-tadelakt grotto guestroom with an enormous tub in the bathroom. Staff organise babysitting and a myriad of cultural activities, from tadelakt workshops with a master artisan and henna tattooing lessons, to staff-accompanied public hammam trips and eco-friendly mountain treks.

The Djemaa el-Fna is a hike from here, but you're close to the main bus station and fleets of taxis to get you anywhere. The northern Medina is mostly residential, and the crowds you'll see along Rue el-Gza are locals shopping for school supplies and dinner ingredients, or headed to nearby mosques and zaouias (saints' shrines) for baraka (blessings).
