A four-floor hostel with free pizza nights and a backyard smoking/drinking area isn't exactly the normal neighbor on a pleasant, respectable residential strip of brownstones in ritzy Upper East Side. But, hey, this is New York - anything goes, bro.Open since 2002, the Wanderers Inn grants backpackers clean, basic rooms within short hoofing distance from the Museum Mile and Central Park. In the same family as the in-and-out-service of the Chelsea International Hostel, Wanderers has a much more personal touch. The small ground-floor kitchen is home to free pizza nights on Wednesday and the industrial, restaurant-style kitchen is open for use after the free breakfast has cleared. Dorms are priced by number of bunks - from four to 10 army-style bunks, all with army-style lockers. Some rooms have private bathrooms, some share. Everything is kept clean, though upper floors seem less stuffy than ground-floor rooms. Private rooms get you a dresser, a couple of old prints on the wall and a small TV with cable. Few backpackers will linger too long in the Upper East Side, but nearby Lexington Ave is home to more ritzy shops and restaurants.

The Upper East Side is mostly big-money stuff. But Museum Mile - with the Metropolitan (tel: 212 879 5500; 1000 Fifth Ave at 82nd St), the Guggenheim (tel: 212-423-3500; 1071 Fifth Ave) and the often overlooked Whitney Museum of American Art (tel: 212 570 3676; 945 Madison Ave at 75th St) - is close. Guests should take the 6 train south to the East Village for downtown drinks.
