Location, location, location. If you want to coax a little romance out of Santiago, you can't beat the cobbled streets of Barrio París. Residencial Londres draws in guests with great rates and pared-down, faded grandeur. Book early, as rooms fill up fast, especially in summer. This old charmer offers budget lodgings at exceptional value a few blocks from the old San Francisco church. Rooms in this former mansion are extra large, softened with lace curtains on the long windows and old mirrored armoires. Still, expect few frills: at these prices you're afforded no more than a whiff of former grandeur. First-floor digs feel musty and beds can be as lumpy as a bowl of Quaker oats. Some guests have complained about a nearby discotheque getting seismic after midnight. Breakfast isn't included but a couple of dollars will get you toast and coffee.
