Can decor be both kooky and tasteful? This newly restored 20th-century mansion tests the limits of whimsy and the result is simply stunning. Natural elements like bamboo, wicker, river stones and wood balance bold colors and funky design. Staff are informative, if not exactly outgoing.Bouncing around Europe and Latin America inspired these young guesthouse owners in their fancy of what the real deal should be. And it's gorgeous. Warm interior spaces invite guests to kick back and interact. A rooftop deck, bar with billiards, and two spacious living areas are among your attractive options. Dorm rooms are spacious, with subdued colors, impeccably varnished floors and wooden lockers. Rates are well above average for backpacker digs, but those really looking to splurge should book the double with sauna tucked away on the top floor, a stately pleasure dome that even Coleridge would approve of.
