If you bag a Grand-Canal-facing room in this charming well-located hotel, your face will be plastered with a justifiably smug look. After all, most people who share your view will be paying a lot more than you are.

A sweet spiral marble staircase leads to a traditional Venetian hotel with parquet floors, damask wallpaper and old mirrors. The hotel used to be part of a 17th-century palace, and you can see from the original stucco ceiling where formerly large rooms have been divided. There are two small doubles with Grand Canal views (Nos 7 and 9) - these are slightly on the pokey side and the layout is constrained. For the same price, larger No 2 overlooks Accademia Bridge. More expensive No 8 has an unusual but appealing semicircular picture window allowing you to admire the Grand Canal from your bed or the pair of large wicker chairs. But number 10 is the winner with a complete original hand-painted ceiling, warm red damask walls and two windows overlooking the canal. All bathrooms are a year old and are spick-and-span.
