If you bag a Grand Canal-facing room in this charming, ideally located hotel at the foot of the Accademia Bridge, your face will be plastered with a justifiably smug look - most people with Grand Canal views will be paying a lot more than you are.A spiral marble staircase leads to a small but sweet traditional Venetian hotel with parquet floors, damask wallpaper and antique mirrors. The hotel used to be part of a 17th-century palace, and you can see from the original stucco ceiling where formerly large rooms have been divided. Two doubles with Grand Canal views (Nos 7 and 9) are a bit cramped, but for the same price, larger No 2 and 3 overlook Accademia Bridge. More expensive No 8 has a semicircular picture window framing Grand Canal views, a pair of wicker easy chairs, and antique art nouveau furnishings. Number 10 is ideal for up to five family or friends, with an original ceiling painted with frolicking creatures, warm red damask walls, and two windows overlooking the canal. All bathrooms are recently updated and scrupulously scrubbed.

Escape the crowds around the Accademia and go for a coffee, wine by the glass, or top-notch light seafood pasta meal at Enoteca Ai Artisti on nearby Calle del Botteghe. Around lunchtime, the outside seats next to a small canal are a real sun trap.
