You'd be hard-pressed to find a budget hotel any closer to St Mark's Square than Hotel Ai Do Mori. The rooms are sweet and some have enviable views of the Basilica. Rates are sometimes cheaper if you pay in cash.Views are everything in Venice and this small, central hotel has a few corkers. Set above shops, the rooms are spread over three floors. Those on the second floor are larger, but the ones in the eaves feature romantic sloping beams. Be sure to request a room with picture-postcard vista of the roof of St Mark's Basilica and the campanile (bell tower). During the high season, rooms with a view are charged at the same rate as those without, so make the most of it if you can! No 11, the painter's room, is the best. The room itself is tiny (absolutely no cat swinging in here), but its diminutive size is more than made up for by a fabulous private terrace overlooking St Mark's Square - one of the best views in Venice. The hotel's colourful decor is attractively offset by parquet floors and timber ceilings and en suite bathrooms are bright and clean. An apartment in the annex sleeps eight.
