Royals, politicos and comfort creatures flock to Lapa's marshmallow-pink, 19th-century manor set in landscaped gardens. Unless you gargle Moët like mouthwash, rates will make you splutter, but this is luxury pure: opulent rooms, exclusive service, gourmet Italian restaurant, stunning outdoor pool, the works. It's oh so quiet at this belle époque manor surrounded by mature gardens in serene Lapa. The red-carpet treatment begins in the lobby where marble floors gleam, fountains trickle and mirrors reflect utter splendour. Bedecked with precious porcelain vases and floral drapes, the elegant quarters come with all the five-star trimmings - from Oscar-winning flicks to complimentary vintage port and marble bathrooms with toasty towels. Flash the readies to upgrade to an Algarve-themed deluxe room with hand-embroidered rugs or the Count of Valenças suite complete with turret affording 360° views. The palm-fringed gardens centre on a gorgeous outdoor pool. Other amenities include an indoor pool and fitness room (try the Power-Plate for all-over shake), Zen-style treatment rooms and a cocktail lounge where a pianist occasionally plays. The Italian restaurant is, as befits a palace, first class.
