While the atmospheric lobby of this 1950s hotel promises so much, the renovated rooms are a disappointment. The position, however, is excellent and it's a pretty good deal for the price. There are several potentially fantastic old hotels in Cairo - this is one of them.

In the foyer and restaurant, there are Oriental lamps, wooden inlaid mother-of-pearl furniture, wooden mashrabiya (wooden lattice-work screens), splendid chandeliers, comfy leather furniture and satin drapes. However, up on the floors (the hotel rooms are on the sixth to eighth floors) the white tiles make it feel more hospital than hotel - and not a particularly clean one, either. The rooms themselves are a decent size, but are let down by the concave beds, mismatched sheets and teensy pillows, while the bathrooms are merely adequate. The hotel is in a great neighbourhood, so you probably won't be in much, but it's yet another old Cairo hotel that could be a great old Cairo hotel.
