Those eunuchs, they knew how to live. Here's your chance to see just how well in this refined courtyard hotel with decorative gardens that once belonged to a noted Qing dynasty eunuch. The full hútòng experience is marred by the garish modern block opposite the entrance, but the historic quarter location near the Drum and Bell Towers is top. Room design varies considerably, so if you want the full-on historical ambience expect to pay for it. Tiny single rooms are bland and tasteless. Spacious doubles and suites are much better, though only the suites, with their four-poster beds and long balconies, could be called stylish. Both the more expensive doubles and suites have pleasant garden views. One of our favourite features of the hotel is the cafe's outdoor patio, which looks out into a garden of splendid old pines, green bamboo, fountains and rockeries. It's about the nicest setting for a meal or afternoon tea you'll find in Beijing. Reception is on the left through the gates.

The hotel is set down a historic hútòng (narrow alley) a few minutes from the Drum and Bell towers. The bars and restaurants of Houhai and Qianhai Lakes are a five-minute walk south. Pop into the Bed Bar (tel: 8400 1554; 17 Zhangwang Hutong) for drinks and Café Sambal (tel: 6400 4875; 43 Doufuchi Hutong) for Malaysian food in modish surrounds; both are a few minutes walk from the hotel.
