Inaugurated in 1937, the Maria Cristina is a close approximation of an Andalusian estate. Guests appreciate the grandeur and tranquility of the place, as opposed to the bustle of nearby Paseo de la Reforma, though most of the colonial charm has been poured into the lobby lounge and adjacent gardens.Through a majestic stone archway, the spacious lobby is drenched in colonial splendor, with carved wood columns and beams, cast-iron chandeliers and azulejo tiles spiralling up the walls of the grand staircase. On the premises are a travel agency, small computer center, beauty salon and restaurant, which gives onto a Sevilla-style patio with a faithful reproduction of a medieval fountain. The bar, in a separate building with its own patio seating, makes a terrific setting for a tequila, served cantina-style with a dish of peanuts alongside. Hummingbirds flit around the feeders that dangle from some lemon trees. Rooms may lack the lobby's colonial splendor but are generally bright and comfortable.

Stroll up broad Paseo de la Reforma, and peek into the Bolsa Mexicana (stock exchange), the shiny sphere-obelisk structure at Río Rhin. Continuing west, you'll reach the heavily fortified US Embassy and the Ángel de la Independencia. Next, cross over into the Euro-toned Pink Zone for coffee: one excellent choice is Cafebrería El Péndulo, a bookstore/cafe with live trova singers toward the weekend.
