With a great location in the old heart of Milan, for many this is the best hotel in Milan - and it's hard to disagree. Dating back to 1863, it's a family-managed affair, with sumptuous antique furniture and polished service.

While staying here you'll be mixing with the ghosts of opera luminaries like Maria Callas and Giuseppe Verdi, and treated just as royally. This is a magnificent old hotel, with old-world elegance that never jumps across the tracks into gaudiness, and subtle and sensitive updates such as the bar with its beautiful burnt-red and orange colour scheme. The classic rooms are unreservedly old-fashioned and the deluxe rooms are bigger with more impressive furnishings. But what everyone wants is stay in one of the themed rooms, such as the Verdi suite (price on application, thank you!), where the composer lived for 20 years. The public areas of the hotel are so splendidly opulent and the Don Carlos restaurant, filled with opera music and memorabilia, offers wonderful cuisine that's more creative than the surrounds would suggest.
