Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This charming Victorian guesthouse dates back to 1886 and in many ways retains the feel of an old boarding house. Compact rooms lead off long, narrow corridors over three floors. High ceilings and creaky wooden floorboards abound.

Of course it's all been brought into the 21st century and every room boasts a fresh lick of paint, crisp white bed linen and colour TVs. There are 77 rooms in total (all with shared bath) so in busy periods it can feel a bit like Grand Central Station. But it's rarely noisy and the staff go out of their way to help you out, so you can forgive the occasional group of school children. What's more, the location can't be beat and is the only choice for those in search of serious retail therapy.

Author Tip

Melbourne's shopping mecca, Chapel St, sits practically on your doorstep and is the place to spend some serious cash. As well as boasting Australian designer boutiques including Alannah Hill and Collette Dinnigan, there are some fun, independent stores that won't have the bank manager threatening to rip up your credit card.
