One bedroom

Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The rooms in these former riding stables have a uniquely dignified air. The hotel enjoys a departure from the main street through a small alley, ensuring peace and quiet in the heart of one of Montreal's busiest neighbourhoods.

All seven rooms are cosy with bare brick walls and flowery bedspreads; some have interesting steep alcoves or sloped ceilings with peculiarly cut angles. The higher floors overlook a lovely patio in the courtyard, which comes alive with brilliant red and pink flowers in the summer. The location is incredibly good: across the street from Marché Bonsecours and just footsteps away from the bistros, street performers and artists of Place Jacques Cartier. Breakfast is adequate with hard-boiled eggs, cereals, a variety of breads and fruits. Beware of the website, which does not connect to a web page, but a downloadable brochure.

Author Tip

Take in the neighbouring sights - Hôtel de Ville, Château de Ramezay and Marché Bonsecours - before ambling down the Quai de l'Horloge or Quai Jacques Cartier, which jut out into the St Lawrence River. Dine old-fashioned French-style in Chez Queux or have crêpes in the inner courtyard of Les Jardins Nelson.
