Quite a find in Darlinghurst, the Altamont features smart-looking, modern rooms with en suites and an easy-going, convivial vibe. Well-priced, nicely designed rooms feature some stark modern details or custom-made Indonesian furniture, breaking up any uniformity in this restored 1830s homestead.

Communal areas filled with fat leather sofas and a pool table are welcoming (especially the terrace) and it's mighty handy for the Cross and the area surrounding it. It's the sort of hotel that sticks in your memory because it offers an alternative to the usual experience, and only just creeps into mid-range territory by a few dollars for deluxe rooms (which drop to budget prices for stays of a week or more). Bathrooms are spacious and look as though they belong in a four-star joint and some rooms have access to small courtyards. There are decent discounts for longer stays too and a smattering of hostel beds(which fill up mighty quickly). While management is friendly, there are times when it may seem a little laid-back for the business market - it's much better suited to low-priced weekends away rather than corporate wrangling.
