Old tends to mean tired in the spanking new city of Abu Dhabi, and this is certainly true of the city's oldest hotel. With a great central location and the opportunity of sharing in the five-star facilities of its neighbour, however, this hotel still holds its own among more budget-conscious clientele.

'First hotel in town' in this instance is not necessarily a compliment: left far behind in almost every respect by its younger siblings, Al-Ain Palace has very little of the palace left about it. That said, there are a number of good reasons why this hotel is a recommended budget choice, including the central location, some popular bars and, most of all, the opportunity to share the five-star treats of its owner's 'other hotel', the formidable Le Royal Meridien. Indeed, Al-Ain Palace backs on to the glamorous pool of its Le Royal cousin, and guests are invited to enjoy the luxury health club facilities. For something more low-key there's the ever popular Ally Pally pub-style bar. Quiet during the week, it metamorphoses at the weekend into the kind of venue that only solo men (or at least broad-minded couples) would appreciate.
