The Hera, located just south of Plaka, had a significant and very successful government-subsidised makeover in time for the 2004 Games and is now a four-star hotel of substantial elegance, with excellent staff and quality accommodations.

Behind the fake neoclassical facade, the sumptuous lobby sets the tone, with dark-panelled wood, plush leather lounges and coffee-table books, while the stained-glass peacock outside points the way to the rooftop bar-restaurant. It's a place of few rooms, and all the better for it. They all have at least a small balcony, facing front or back. Those high up at the front also have views to the Acropolis, but if that's your priority, you might want to upgrade to a junior suite, which have larger balconies. The back rooms have plenty of light, and are a little more spacious. All rooms are well equipped and have excellent bathrooms. The odd blemish - slightly stained carpet, scratched or suitcase-marked wallpaper - can be easily forgiven. The roof is excellent, with great Parthenon views - it's heated in winter and open in summer.
