Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Although not the only hotel by this name in Greece, the Hermes stands out as a chic central Athens choice. From the attractive painted map of Greece in the lobby to the slickly renovated rooms, it's a treat for the eyes and has several thoughtful touches for added comfort.

The rooms either face the street, with a small balcony, or have large windows facing back over Plaka. Done out in red velour and polished wooden floors, they have comfortable furnishings, although the beds are, typically for Greece, fairly narrow. There are good bathrooms with sliding doors and satellite TV on a turntable. The handsome lounge has a 24-hour bar, a voguishly large plasma-screen TV and, more encouragingly, some books to browse. There's also a little playroom for kids and friendly, helpful service. The hotel, like its sister establishments (the Achilleas, Plaka, and Arion), is a good deal cheaper off-season. The hotel is on the edge of the Plaka district and also very handy for the main shopping street, Ermou.

Author Tip

Near the hotel, the charming Byzantine church of Agios Eleftherios stands in Plateia Mitropoleos. It was once the city's cathedral (the large newer cathedral looms alongside).
