Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This downmarket and very charming spot is a reliable favourite: a YHA hostel from the old days. Before the era of 25 euro dorm beds and in-house bars, backpackers once slept in two types of hostel - grim ones, and fun ones. This is without question one of the latter, and is very low-priced.

The hostel is in the Pangrati district, a pleasant and typical Athens residential area with a number of good bars and restaurants. It's a 20-minute walk from the centre of Athens, and easily reached on trolley-buses from Syntagma Square. There's no obvious sign outside. Accommodation is in simple, 'cosy' six-bed dorms, which are heated, and have decent mattresses. Guests also have use of a simple retro kitchen and a laundry. The showers work with coins if you want hot water and there's a sunny roof to relax on. There's no curfew, but there's a security camera at the entrance. The owner, Yiannis, is a delight, and is always tinkering on small improvement projects to his much-loved hostel. There's a board for philosophy, and one for jokes, and you'll be made to feel utterly welcome. There are no frills or luxury here, just very low-priced accommodation and character in spades.
