This appealing and unpretentious guesthouse, seconds away from MG Rd, is easily spotted by its neatly clipped green lawn and white painted garden furniture. It's as if a suburban home has been transplanted to the heart of the city, a feeling confirmed when you step inside this cosy nine-room property.

The sizeable air-conditioned rooms are decorated simply with pine furniture and bright curtains and bedspreads. Big TVs offer up the full range of satellite TV channels and there's free wi-fi access. The one suite with its own lounge is good for a family. There's no need to fear the city's regular electricity cuts as Ashley Inn has backup power and individual geysers in each bathroom for constant hot water.
