Lonely Planet Review

Quotes In this fast-paced and even faster changing city, traditional budget Indian hotels are something of a dying breed, particularly along the main commercial strip of MG Rd. One survivor hanging in there is the Brindavan. Just don't expect any fancy computer reservation systems!

Behind the reception desk a wall of business cards in brass slots details the names of the guests - to join their ranks you'll have to book well in advance. The rooms are equally stripped to essential basics - a bed, an ancient TV and telephone and a ceiling fan. Overall there's a faded 1930s feel to the place - the Mahatma himself would probably have felt right at home here. Like many of the guests he'd have also enjoyed the canteen at the rear of the lobby; garlands of jasmine perfume the air as you walk through its door; and the colonial traditions are preserved with 'tiffin' served every afternoon and evening.

Author Tip

You couldn't be better placed for shopping along MG and Brigade Rds, followed up by a cooling Kingfisher beer at the surreal bar NASA.

Curious Fact

For 40 years S M Krishna has been doling out palm readings and astrological advice from one of the hotel's rooms.
