Lonely Planet Review
If you're looking forward to getting stuck into George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia, then where better to do so than the place where the author recovered from a bullet wound? Space is scarce in most of the rooms but some have semicircular balconies with wonderful views over the life of La Rambla.
The Hotel Continental has been around since 1898 and you may wonder whether some of the wallpaper has been as well - but it's not old, just floral. The rooms may be small but they cram in a surprising range of amenities: microwave, TV, hairdryer, fridge, security box, ceiling fan, air-con and adequate hanging space. Unusually for hotels in this price range, prices include not only a simple buffet breakfast but free snacks, cold drinks, tea, coffee and Internet throughout the day. It's also very professionally run with a family feel to the place, and a pleasant breakfast/sitting room. Add the fact that it has more character than most and a great location, and you've got one of the better accommodation choices along La Rambla.
