Lonely Planet Review

The hotel has functional rooms and some renovated options, with additional features including parquet floors, hairdryers and original art depicting Barcelona. Some rooms are bigger than others, and those facing the street are light-filled (the light tones and colourful artwork help in this regard) and not too noisy. You can sunbathe on the roof.

There are plans to extend the renovations to all rooms, which will ease the disparity between the newer (currently two-thirds of the hotel) and older rooms. Some of the newer rooms offer flat-screen TVs. Make sure you ask the hotel staff to explain the high-tech multiple-jet showers (before you disrobe!). Good-sized and comfortable beds are among the other benefits of this well-tended place where the staff are friendly, all the more so once you get to know them. Location is another bonus - in a quietish corner of El Raval but an easy stroll to La Rambla.

How to Get There

By bus:
Take the A1 blue bus from the airport to Plaça Catalunya.
Take the metro (linea 3, green line) to Liceu stop.
Walk two blocks on Hospital St. (on the left as you leave the metro).
Turn left on Junta de Comerç st. (the first street after St. Agustí).
You will see the sign for Hotel Principal on your right.

By train:Take the train from the airport to estació de Sants (Sants station).
Take the metro (linea 3, green line) to Liceu stop.
Walk two blocks on Hospital St. (on the left as you leave the metro).
Turn left on Junta de Comerç st. (the first street after St. Agustí).
You will see the sign for Hotel Principal on your right.

By taxi: go to the taxi line in front of the airport. This should cost around 30 Euros.

By car:
When you arrive to Barcelona, ask for Plaza Catalunya and take Les Rambles.
On Les Rambles you have to turn right on Hospital St.
After two blocks on Hospital St. turn left on Junta de Comerç st. (the first street after the square). You will see the sign.

Outside the old city walls was the city's slum area. Although it retains a gritty, edgy feel in some quarters, it's also alive with students, intriguing little bars and even budding Pakistani cricketers who take over the nearby Rambla del Raval some afternoons. It's this mixed crowd that have made Organic, opposite the hotel, one of Barcelona's most popular vegetarian restaurants.
