Built by the Duke of Wellington in 1830 as a home for his mistress, Apsley House still retains all the charm and grace of this bygone era with individually furnished rooms full of period antiques, heavy drapes, original oil paintings and subtle florals.

Elegant but not overbearing, the beautiful rooms here have just the right combination of period style and modern luxury. The house is very obviously the pride and joy of its owners, who have paid incredible attention to detail in every room and offer a very personal service, making it feel much more like a lavish family-run guesthouse than an impersonal hotel. Set far enough from town to have a decent garden and ample parking space, it's also away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre with birdsong rather than street noise to give you an early morning call. Several rooms feature imposing four-poster beds and the family suite has garden access and space for up to five people in connecting rooms. For a touch of the class, refinement and tranquility of gracious 18th-century living, you couldn't get much better.
