Dripping with character, stuffed with period antiques, and gloriously eccentric, Bloomfield House is like no other accommodation option in Bath. Along with the silk curtains and trompe l'oeil paintings you'll get a bounding sheepdog and a flock of boho kids.

Staying at Bloomfield really means joining in the family life of your amiable hosts - cats and a dog roam the public rooms and children are most welcome to come and play in what must be the ultimate hide-and-seek location. If you'd rather an anonymous stay in the city centre this isn't the place for you, but then you'll miss the four-poster and half tester beds, the luxurious silks and velvets, the mahogany-panelled bathrooms, the antique furniture and the effortlessly laid-back air of a guesthouse that's also a chaotic home - albeit in one of Bath's finest period houses. Appropriately for the owners (founders of the farmers markets) the guesthouse is run on sustainable principles: discounts are offered to anyone arriving by public transport, there's fair trade coffee in the hospitality trays and local organic bacon for breakfast.
