Lonely Planet Review

You could take your mother here and feel you'd done right by her. She might gripe a bit that the place is not perfectly maintained, but the quiet comfort of the rooms and the pleasing decor, neither ostentatious nor bare-bones, will soothe her complaints. And she'll like the price, too.

In fact, when rooms are discounted they offer excellent value for the money. This place has a pool (and a fine one at that), chic dining and drinking options, a decent fitness centre, room-side ADSL, open city views from the upper floors (some can see the Forbidden City in the distance) and efficient English-speaking staff. Room designs are pretty much the same, though the deluxes are considerably larger and have walk-in closets. The neighbourhood around the hotel is being modernised at a very quick rate, but a number of charming hutongs (narrow alleys)and historical sites are still within walking distance. Major attractions like the Forbidden City are only a few kilometres away.

Author Tip

Check out the grand South Cathedral just a short walk south. It was first constructed (it's been razed three times) in 1703. Zhengyici Theatre, housed in an old wooden teahouse, is a good place for a night of Beijing opera. The traditional market street atmosphere of Liulichang Dongjie is a delightful setting for antique and knick-knack shopping.
