'We're in Lonely Planet!' shouts the front wall of this self-proclaimed backpacker hostel. True to form, this is a genuine haven for the international shoestring set, and travelers from Sweden to South Korea gather on the plant-drenched terrace to plot their itineraries.Wedged between a pair of by-the-hour dives, the hostel operates amid a seedy sex-trade district, and the steel gate may have a protective or imprisoning effect, depending on your perspective. Plain, functional rooms are generally well-scrubbed (though the cockroach population remains undeterred), and rattling fans keep the air circulating. The nicest feature of the place is the raised terrace, which makes it possible to enjoy the cool, evening air and street life from a safe vantage. Shaded by spreading mango trees, this is where travelers meet to thumb through their Lonely Planet guides and compare notes. The hostel's Portuguese owners are well versed in travelers' needs, offering laundry service, luggage storage and airport pickup by their knowledgeable English-speaking driver, Sr Ferrer. The reception staff's eagerness to please can reach manic levels.

A block north is Blvd de Sabana Grande, the neighbourhood's long pedestrian promenade. Inundated by vendors until recently, the boulevard has reportedly been cleared, so should again be fine for strolling with an obligatory stop for coffee and pastries at El Gran Café. By night, organise a group outing to El Maní Es Así, Caracas' premier salsa dancing club, or to nearby Moulin Rouge for live rock.
