Hotel Miramar has long been the archetypal gringo hotel, with a noisy, hippie-type atmosphere, but it's very basic and unkempt. It has a café serving budget meals, snacks, soft drinks and beer. This is also the place to come to inquire about treks and excursions around the area. Full Lonely Planet Review ›

Value for money, this is probably the best midrange place in town. It's well maintained (rare in Santa Marta) and there is a pretty courtyard with a small swimming pool. The downside is the smallish rooms. Full Lonely Planet Review ›

About Santa Marta (Caribbean Coast (Columbia))

Lounging on the beach is a favorite pastime on Santa Marta's idyllic coast (Photographer: Krzysztof Dydynski)

Almost 500 years ago, Santa Marta was the first Colombian town founded by the Spaniards. Today it's a popular holiday town and jumping-off point for the superb Parque Nacional Tayrona, ancient Ciudad Perdida (Lost City), and the chilled beach hang-out and scuba diving center of Taganga.
