Billing itself as a 'lifestyle hotel', the 130-room D2 has renovated a building formerly occupied by the Chiang Inn and transformed it into a comfortable, eye-pleasing fusion of modern European minimalism with Thai colours and textures.

Th Chang Khlan, which morphs into the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar every evening at sunset, isn't known for its hotels, which tend to cater either to cut-rate tour groups or to Thai business travellers. D2 has bucked the trend and quietly opened what could become one of the most in-demand hotels in Chiang Mai. It's aimed squarely at visitors who have money to spend but find the opulence of the Dhara Dhevi or The Rachamankha over the top or too 'tourist-themed' (not to mention pricey). Public spaces avoid clutter and bombast, substituting simple, comfortable designer furnishings upholstered in warm-toned Thai silks and cottons. The 'mix' in the Mix Bar off the lobby refers not only to the custom cocktails but to the custom-mixed lounge music, which the D2 plans to issue on its own label. Other facilities include a fitness centre and spa.
