Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Beloved by business people who finally have a Damascus hotel with reliable high-speed Internet and swish restaurants where they can entertain (or, um, 'do business') this lavish five star also sees its fair share of travellers intent on relaxing by the swimming pool or spa before or after a lengthy Mid-East sojourn. The faultless service, easily the best in Syria, is memorable, from the warm welcome at breakfast to the well-drilled restaurant teams keen to explain the cuisine. Where it's most appreciated, however, is by the pool, where the staff constantly deliver icy water, cold face towels, Evian sprays, and frozen fruit kebabs to their fast-frying guests. The spacious, comfortable rooms are richly decorated with all the creature comforts you expect from a luxury hotel (girls will love the L'Occitane toiletries), and spectacular views over the city, particularly stunning at night.

Author Tip

The National Museum opposite should be your first stop, and the new town with its stylish boutiques and cafes is a short stroll away. The hotel's sumptuous lobby coffee shop buzzes all day, providing fascinating people-watching, and in summer there's live music on the terrace. Pop into cosy low-lit bar XO for drinks and complimentary snacks, before dining at Al Halabi, Syria's finest restaurant, specialising in Aleppan cuisine.

Curious Fact

Furnished with Oriental antiques, the Royal Suite occupies the entire 18th floor.
