Lonely Planet Review

Quotes While first impressions from outside might lead you to think this is a beach shack mistakenly plonked in central Damascus, once inside its air-conditioned interior, you'll discover an endearingly homely affair, with a suitably languorous feel. After a warm welcome by Ahmad, Sayer or Mohammed, you'll be shown the courtyard with tables and cane chairs where travellers sit and write postcards - off this are most of the rooms. Double and twin rooms have new beds and spotlessly clean sheets, air-conditioning/heating, hot water, and the bathroom 'cabinet' is spotlessly clean - sheets, towels and shampoo are also provided, a rarity at this level. Ask for an upstairs room - they're a private escape from the craziness of the capital. The brothers will tell you about their long list of services (airport pick-up, laundry, driver, doctor & parking) but all in good time…

Author Tip

If you're tired of eating out with the Birkenstock-clad kids in this backpackers' quarter, and want to try authentic home-style Syrian cuisine, Ahmad, Sayer and Mohammed can organise a home-cooked meal, courtesy of their mother, to be brought to the hotel.

Curious Fact

The historic Souq Saroujah area was the first part of Damascus to be built outside the city walls in the 13th century.
