Lonely Planet Review

Quotes It's easy to see why the Omayad Hotel is a local institution - until the Four Seasons opened, the city's elite wouldn't have thought of holding their weddings anywhere else - the service is warm and friendly, the decor classically elegant, and the whole place has an endearing old-fashioned charm.

Once you enter the splendid wrought iron doors and cross the polished marble floors, it's easy to appreciate why the centrally-located Ommayad remains deservedly popular despite the presence of several fine international five stars in Damascus. One of the city's elder hotels, the lovely lobby of the Ommayad still features some of its original Art Deco furniture, making it a pleasure to wait for your room. The enormous renovated rooms are comfortable and well equipped, although it's a shame they're not more in tune with the classical style of the lobby. There is a characterful bar and several restaurants, the most popular of which is rooftop Samaya with stunning views of the city and mountains - mesmerising on a clear starry night! You may be lucky enough to be there while there's a wedding on and get invited in to join the celebrations.

Author Tip

Take a stroll down Sharia Maysaloun, lined with cafes and shops, to Sharia Al-Amer iz-Eddin, a lively little street with several popular cafes and restaurants, such as the excellent Gemini and Downtown. Take Sharia Seifeddin Al-Khatib to Nejmeh Square from where you can appreciate splendid examples of Syrian Art Deco architecture, many undergoing restoration, and a couple featuring oriental details like Mashrabiyya screens.
