Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A rambling place of disparate buildings served by a great staff, this is the best choice for business travellers to Dili. The cheapest rooms share bathrooms; all have highspeed (by local standards) Internet and satellite TV.

Like the country, the Hotel Dili has been through a lot. The original owners fled when the Indonesians invaded in 1975. For the next 24 years the property got bounced around a bit. Now the sons of the owners are back, having reclaimed the family's legacy. The hotel is really a collection of rooms that range from tiny, shared-bathroom singles to large units in older single-story buildings to really large units in converted portable containers. But all the rooms are good for people with work to do and are good value at their price point (rates vary hugely). The common grounds have lots of plants and you'll often see a local mover-and-shaker or two having a drink. The waterfront is right across the street.

Author Tip

The hotel is right in the centre and close to cafes, the bank, services and government offices. This means you can walk when taxi-action dries up (a common occurrence). Walk about the scruffy park across the street and you'll meet friendly fruit, vegetable and fish vendors and enjoy the downright pretty views of the ocean and coast.
