On a street with several rather grotty yet expensive hotels, this family-run charmer is a nice retreat from the important yet shabby street outside. The rooms face a central courtyard and although small, are great value.

Many of the foreign crowd in Dili make their escape (literally) to Bali any chance they get. Not only is it easily reachable by non-stop flight but it's, well, Bali. In its own simple way, the Rocella is a tiny bit of Bali in Dili. Think cheap-as-a-cold-beer Kuta and you get the idea. The one-story compound has eight rooms with a traditional, older feel that surrounds a central courtyard. Nothing's very big - in many rooms you can't get up on the wrong side of the bed because it is pushed up against the wall - but the cafe is genial and you may actually prefer Dili's quiet night streets to Kuta's all-night blather.
