This gorgeous new Santa Fe-style hotel seems out of place in Otavalo, but it's great value. The modern design includes cedar floors, mosaic tiles and skylights sculpted into the adobe. About Otavalo (Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands)

Big, fresh and tasty: vegetable stall at Poncho Plaza (Photographer: Richard I'Anson)

Once a crossroads for pre-Incan jungle traders, this small town is now internationally famous for its Saturday market - a vivid, festive affair hosted by enthusiastic Otaveleños in traditional dress. Remarkably, however, it's not some sham affair put on for the sake of visiting gawkers.
