Although the stairwell up to the 2nd floor isn't promising, this no-frills guesthouse is still one of the best deals in town, especially when you consider the fact that most rooms have up-close views of the Duomo, Campanile and Baptistery.

The hotel was once part of the bishop's private residence, and you can still see traces of some original fresco in several rooms. Quarters are remarkably spacious, especially the corner triple, which also has particularly arresting views. The decor has seen better days, but the old iron beds have comfortable-enough mattresses and the parquet floors and marble tabletops add a hint of faded luxury. Rooms that face the street have double-paned windows - a must since they open onto what is virtually the busiest intersection in the city. For an extra fee per person, they'll even bring you a continental breakfast in bed. And of course from here you are a short walk from virtually every major site on this side of the Arno, from Ponte Vecchio to Santa Maria Novella.
