Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This swank hotel makes great use of space, from hidden sleeping lofts to glass-enclosed bathtubs overlooking the West Fukuoka Marina. Rooms have striking floor-to-ceiling views and a stark white-on-white theme throughout. Large beds and comfy reading chairs give the place the feel of a private apartment.

Don't be fooled by Evergreen's boxy exterior. Inside, it's a world of understated elegance and stylish design. There are three room types, all with great ocean views. Even the standard rooms are equipped with glass-enclosed baths with views of the adjacent yacht harbour. Furnishings are on the nautical side (spare but comfortable) and mosquito nets round out the tropical ambience. Several deluxe corner rooms are outfitted with full canopy beds. All rooms have marble or wood floors, private balconies, flat-screen TVs and coffee makers. A 7th-floor chapel of equal parts glass and wood defies the laws of gravity and dimension, seeming to merge with the horizon beyond.

Author Tip

The view's the thing in West Fukuoka, whether it's from the observation platform at nearby Fukuoka Tower, or next to the hotel from the top of the Sky Dream Ferris wheel, built in 2002. It's Asia's largest Ferris wheel at 120m (395 ft) in height. And the affordable 20-minute ride makes it a favourite get-a-way for local teens looking to steal a kiss.
