Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Count on this upscale chain for splendid service, handsome rooms and killer location in Fukuoka. Even the standard rooms have great views of the city or Hakata Bay. The hotel is part of the Hakata Riverain complex, which includes a city showpiece, the Asian Arts Museum.

The Okura's large circular lobby is anchored by four massive marble columns. Carefully arranged clusters of small tables and comfortable chairs also make it a perfect spot for meeting up with friends or business associates. Most of Okura's 267 rooms are Western-style, along with a handful of serene Japanese tatami rooms. Handsome wood and pastel furnishings include love seats and large desks, along with great views of Hakata Bay or the city. The Okura has a well-deserved reputation for service. The English-speaking staff are friendly and unfailingly generous with their time. The hotel is adjacent to the Fukuoka Asian Art Musuem, and just a short walk from the futuristic-looking Canal City shopping and entertainment complex.

Author Tip

You're next door to the handsome Asian Art Museum, which always features the work of an artist-in-residence. You'll also get a glimpse of Fukuoka's Asian links in the main gallery where modern work from China and Korea makes the artistic connection. For a dose of contemporary architecture, follow the river to the futuristic Canal City shopping complex. Then head to the 5th floor's Ramen Stadium to sample noodles from Hokkaido to Kyushu.
