Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This sparkling 19-room hostel near Hakata Station is Kyushu's newest. Rooms are light and comfortable, the share kitchen is well-stocked, and there's no curfew. In addition, you have a choice of dorm beds or private rooms.

Khaosan Fukuoka is a bargain whether you're travelling solo or not. The entire place has a clean and fresh feel. All bath and toilet facilities are shared in typical hostel style. A plus for non-smokers is the smoke-free policy throughout - nice for hanging out in the TV/DVD lounge area or the common kitchen where you'll run into travellers from around Japan and beyond. And you can stay in global phone contact via Skype hook-ups on each of the three high-speed Internet computers in the lobby. The chatty English-speaking manager and staff will keep you busy with tips on Fukuoka by day and by night. One drawback for families: kids are welcome, but not under age 10.

Author Tip

Do some bargain gift shopping at the rambling Hundred Yen Shop, opposite JR Hakata Station. You'll find it all, from tea bowls to chocolate bars. Ask one of the helpful clerks to show you the Japanese kanji for 'Made in Japan' so you don't take home chopsticks or incense made in China.
