Lonely Planet Review

Two spacious, private and characterful self-contained units in one of the few remaining pieces of Calangute where your neighbours are more likely to be Goan than foreign.

Perfect if you want to pretend you're living rather than visiting. These two self-contained apartments are hidden among homes a short walk from the beach. The seclusion of Casa Leyla has been maintained by the absence of roads leading to it. It can only be accessed by small pathways that you're hard-pressed to get even a scooter down. The proud bright blue building has been cheerfully painted with nostalgic images of the way Goa used to be. The two units (one upstairs, one down) are spacious and clean with separate bedroom, bathrooms and living rooms. The upstairs unit has its own balcony and both have lockable cupboards for valuables. The charismatic management waxes lyrical on the walls with a sign reading 'Tourists please shut up! Quiet go to sleep or beach after 10pm'. The only thing about the place that resembles a hotel is that your only visitor will be a cleaning lady.

Author Tip

Wander lazily through the coconut trees and clotheslines of your neighbours' backyards towards the beach. When you're done with the sun, head home again for a nap and charge yourself up for a cocktail at Tito's in Baga or a beer in crowded Calangute, even if only to remind yourself how lucky you are to be staying here.
