Lonely Planet Review

Quotes On the edge of the Dongjiao Yelin coconut plantation and the South China Sea, the Prima is a wonderfully laid-back beachside resort that is totally unpretentious. It's primarily a Chinese place, but in the low season especially (May to October) you'll have the idyllic beach and the top-value rooms almost to yourself.

Not surprisingly for a place located in a famous coconut grove, the resort sits on the classic palm-fringed beach. Under those palms are 202 rooms, mostly in one- and two-storey, stylish wooden chalets that vary in price depending on size and their proximity to the beach. And it's a great beach for exploring. There are a few waves (size depending on the proximity of a typhoon) and plenty of WWII concrete bunkers, including one smack bang in the middle of the resort - apparently the beach here would have made a fine landing spot. The two restaurants serve mainly Chinese cuisine at relatively reasonable prices for a resort. All up, this is one of the most affordable beachside resorts in Hainán, particularly in the low season.

Author Tip

The Dongjiao Yelin plantation is actually a long trip back in time from Wenchang, so the area around is blissfully undeveloped - for now. If you tire of the resort food, there are a few local eateries scattered around the nearby beaches and the village. Elsewhere, long stretches of beach are populated by only the occasional fisherman and thousands of coconut palms, so start walking.

Curious Fact

Wenchang is the birthplace of the Soong sisters, Meiling and Qingling, the wives of Sun Yat Sen and Chiang Kai Shek. At the entrance to the hotel is a statue of the women and a third sister. The home they were born in is a few kilometres away.
