Smack bang in the middle of the Yalong Bay strip, the brand new Mangrove Tree Resort offers lots of style and most of the five-star amenities for less than what you might pay at the bigger-name resorts. Visually, it's quite impressive and you immediately feel that this is, indeed, a luxury beachside resort. We did find the service a bit stiff and a little off the pace, but the resort had only been open for three months so this should improve. The 502 spacious rooms are set in several buildings around a deep-blue lagoon pool. The decor includes plenty of traditional materials, such as coconut wood, and pushes the seaside feel with woven overhead fans to complement the air-con. But while the promotional blurb says 82% of rooms have a sea view, for us that just didn't add up. Perhaps a few of those 'sea views' are merely glimpses? For booking purposes, note that Garden and Lake View rooms face away from the sea but as a consolation they have a cool outside shower on the balcony. In terms of value for money, the Deluxe Seaview room is best.
