Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The smart new Wuzhishan Holiday Inn has nothing at all to do with the international hotel chain, but it does offer some stylish mid-range rooms at a budget price. Located just across the river from the main part of town, they have expansive views of the town and surrounding hills.

The lobby promises a lot, with its tiled floors, understated style and smiling staff (though their English is pretty limited). And upstairs the 62 rooms over 11 floors don't disappoint. The rooms range from adequately sized singles (with double beds) to the spacious top-floor suites with their superb balcony views (No 1102 is the best of the penthouse suites). Fake flowers notwithstanding, there is nothing too offensive to report from the rooms, though due to the fact that very few Westerners pass through these parts, you won't find any English channels on TV. The restaurant serves a range of Chinese cuisines, including a few of the local Li and Miao (Hmong) dishes and Hainan's famous Wenchang chicken. All up, a very comfortable stay in a wonderfully pleasant city at a bargain price.

Author Tip

Not into fishing? Then when the sun goes down get out on the town. The evening is when Wuzhishan really comes alive. Head for the outdoor barbeque and beer stalls just opposite the bus station and behind the Jinyuan Hotel - ask for Jia Jia Shao Kao Yuan. Both the Yinjiang food and the vibe are great. After a few Anchors, head upstairs to the rooftop dance place.
