Lonely Planet Review

Located a few minutes walk from the busiest part of the Pham Ngu Lao backpacker area, the Ha Vy is a family-run minihotel that has been getting good reviews from travellers for 10 years.

It's the congenial staff who really make the Ha Vy stand out; they're happy to help however they can and there's no hard sell on tours. The 25 rooms are comfortable without being flash, as you'd expect in this category, and they come in a range of incarnations. The cheapest rooms are small, have small windows and microscopic bathrooms. The larger rooms are much better. Some have two windows, allowing a refreshing breeze, and some have spacious bathrooms with tubs. Front rooms have street views but are not at all recommended to light sleepers. There is no lift, but the climb isn't nearly as bad as in some Pham Ngu Lao properties. The Ha Vy's reputation means it's often full so it's best to book ahead as far as you can. Oh, and the breakfast includes fantastic fresh orange juice!

Author Tip

The Santa Cafe, on the corner of Bui Vien and Do Quang Dau, is a good place for cheapish food at any time of day. Otherwise, for any other nutrition head along Bui Vien towards De Tham.

Curious Fact

The Ha Vy is named after the daughter of the delightful owner, Mrs Tam.
