Lonely Planet Review

Though not in the same league as some of its neighbours, the Kowloon Hotel Hong Kong shares their impressive location and has enough style and self-conscious extravagance to impress in its own right. The standard room rates are also a good deal considering this is still a top-end hotel.

The hotel's glass-ribbed facade reflects the posterior of the landmark Peninsula Hotel on the other side of Middle Rd, perhaps trying to visually appropriate some of that establishment's prestige. Regardless, the Kowloon Hotel Hong Kong speaks for itself with first-class service, decent rooms (though only a handful offer harbour views) and some sophisticated bars and eateries. These include the basement restaurant Hoi Yat Heen (formerly known as Wan Loong Court), famous for its dim sum treats. Parts of the hotel try a little too hard to make an impression, such as the foyer with its excess of veined marble under a glacial-looking ceiling.

Author Tip

This end of Nathan Rd is not known as the Golden Mile for nothing. It's a frenzied retail strip where everything is up for sale. You don't have to walk far before someone tries to sell you a copy of a Rolex watch or a new suit.
