Lonely Planet Review

The hostel formerly known as Wang Fat is a good place to meet other backpackers, with 110 rooms scattered through several floors of a large apartment building. They're not spacious, but many are newly renovated with phone, TV and fridge. There's laundry facilities, long-term storage, free Internet access and wi-fi, but be sure to get a receipt when you pay.

As with other recommendable guesthouses, Hong Kong Hostel excels in cleanliness, security and location. The latter includes being only a few minutes' walk from a MTR station entrance. These characteristics, plus well-equipped rooms, are obviously appreciated by the budget travellers who are constantly buzzing themselves in and out of the building. You could take a room in a very quiet back corner of the building, but it's much more interesting (albeit much noisier) to take one that overlooks the comings and goings along Paterson St. Rooms do vary, it must be said, so try to look at a few first. Note that there's no signage out the front of the building in which the hostel is located; you'll have to buzz the flat and be ushered in past a doorman.

How to Get There

Take the Cityflyers Airport Bus No. A11 from Hong Kong Airport to Hong Kong Hostel. The air-conditioned bus costs HK$40 per person and takes about 40 minutes. Get off at Stop No. 14 (Yee Wo Street in Causeway Bay)
After exiting the bus, turn left (you will notice an overhead circle walk bridge just ahead). Keep walking in the direction of this overhead bridge. Walk across the small street (Sugar Street) going around the stairs of the overhead walk bridge. As you keep on walking, you will notice a McDonald’s across the street. Turn right on the pedestrian walkway (which is directly across from McDonalds). At the end of this short pedestrian walkway you will be crossing Great George St. Keep walking straight ahead as you will be on Paterson St, and you will see Wellcome Store on the right hand side. Starbucks coffee shop will be on the left hand side of Paterson St. HK Hostel will be about 30 meters (100 feet) to the right of Starbucks.

Author Tip

At noon every day you'll hear a loud bang from down on the harbour front. Upon investigation you'll discover that this is the firing of the Noonday Gun, a colonial relic from 1901.
